Why are you taking part?:
“Growing up I had an older brother with chemical dependency problems. As a result he spent several years living on the streets before cleaning up his life for good. This took a heavy toll on him physically and mentally. I believe a lot more needs to be done, and with the support of my company, I am now in a position where I can help in eradicating homelessness.”

Mike Exton

Occupation:
Managing Director, Novartis Taiwan Ltd

Why are you taking part?:
“I have dedicated a significant portion of my professional career to improving healthcare for individuals with severe mental illness. During this time I have observed first hand the marginalization of people with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other life-changing mental health conditions. Perhaps the most debilitating consequence of the downward spiral that many suffer is homelessness; this leads to an inevitable state of helplessness – poor health, unemployment and social isolation.

Those that are homeless, for whatever reason, need our help and support. Most, if not all have been dealt a cruel hand in the card game of life. They deserve a re-deal – another shot at improving their life. I am therefore a proud supporter of the CEO sleepout, to raise awareness for those less lucky than myself.”

Catherine Raper

Catherine Raper
Occupation:
Representative, Australian Office Taipei

Why are you taking part?:
“Recently in Taiwan, on one of the coldest days there in decades, I saw people sleeping rough in the tunnel beneath the train station. As I walked past, some volunteers were coming the other way, putting down sleeping bags beside each lying figure. I was troubled by the poor situation of these homeless people, but touched by the kindness of those volunteers. I would like to do my part to raise awareness of homelessness, and hopefully do a little bit to help, by taking part in The Salvation Army CEO Sleepout in Taipei.”

Occupation:
Director, New Zealand Commerce and Industry Office

Why are you taking part?:
“By taking part in the CEO Sleepout, I hope that I can help raise awareness and funds for the homeless people of Taiwan. Homeless people are unfortunately a reality everywhere in the world and it is important that we raise our awareness of their circumstances. A home provides one with roots, identity, security, a sense of belonging and a place of emotional wellbeing. Not having access to regular, safe, secure and adequate housing would be a terrible place to find yourself. It is wonderful that we have organisations such as The Salvation Army that work to help people in need. I hope that by taking part in the CEO Sleepout Taiwan that I can play a small part in helping raise money and awareness for this important work.”

Major Daniel Chen

Major Daniel Chen
Occupation:
Director of Taipei Homeless Caring Centre, The Salvation Army in Taiwan

Why are you taking part?:
“As the director of the Homeless Centre, I am very aware of the needs of the homeless. However, to actually experience what being a homeless is like is something completely different. Under the calling of the Regional Commander, I hope to experience sleeping rough with the CEO’s from various companies. I hope to get a feel of the many difficulties faced by the homeless, and to know the psychological barriers they needed to overcome. I believe this will be a meaningful experience. Moreover, the Regional Commander of The Salvation Army in Taiwan has already personally registered for the event, leaving a good example for us. This fundraising event is a way for the Homeless Centre to be become self-reliant. When we start doing something and gain new experiences, they will be memories that we will cherish. We desire this to be an event that will inspire the hearts of many more CEO’s to show their care to the homeless, so they can return to the workplace and become people who can in turn extend a helping hand to others!”
